Hyderabad is set to witness a major upgrade in its public transport system with the addition of 2,000 electric buses under the PM e-Drive initiative, marking a significant push towards cleaner and smarter urban mobility. Two Telangana-based companies have reportedly secured tenders for the project, paving the way for large-scale deployment of EV buses in the city.

The initiative aims to reduce pollution, cut fuel dependency, and modernize Hyderabad’s transport infrastructure. The introduction of electric buses is expected to improve commuter convenience, strengthen city connectivity, and support sustainable development goals.

Officials believe the move will help bring down vehicular emissions, particularly in highly congested zones, while also lowering long-term operational costs compared to diesel fleets. The new buses are expected to feature modern technology, better passenger comfort, enhanced safety systems, and digital ticketing support.

The rollout will be phased, with routes prioritizing busy corridors and underserved urban stretches. Transport authorities and stakeholders are coordinating on charging infrastructure, depot planning, and maintenance ecosystems to ensure smooth integration.

With Hyderabad already positioning itself as a technology and innovation hub, this large-scale electric mobility shift could set a strong example for urban transport transformation across India.
